  • For Assignment #2, you will develop a year-long (52-week) training program for the athlete you began training for the Assignment #1 (Athlete Analysis). For Assignment #2, you will be developing the overall periodization plan by determining what phases and cycles will be followed, working back from the competitive season or the last competition or signature event the athlete competes in. The length of each phase and cycle as well as the specific workouts within them will vary depending on the sport/event.
  • For Assignments 3 and 4 you will be developing the details including the specific training variables, workouts, and competitions so you do not need to include those details yet.

SPHE 323 – Assignment 2

Instructions: Complete the following worksheet. Provide all information as specified in the document. See the Sample Answer document and Assignment 2 Rubric for additional guidance and resources.

1) Athlete Demographic Information (5 pts.)

Age:

Sex:

Height/weight:

2) Periodization Plan (20 pts.)

Describe the 52-week periodization plan, dividing the year into phases and cycles that are well defined (e.g., off-season, pre-season, in-season).

Periodization type (block, linear, non-linear).

Continue typing if you need more space.

3) Athlete’s Goals (20 pts.)

What are the specific goals of the athlete?

· Explain each phase and cycle based on the specific goals of the athlete.

· Explain your reasoning for how following the plan will assist in reaching a goal.

· You must use a visual (chart, grid, etc.) as part of your presentation of this information. You will place it below (#4).

Continue typing if you need more space.

4) Visual of Periodization Plan (10 points)

Add visuals (e.g., charts, tables) of your periodization plan showing the progress for the entire year. Refer to this article from Phillips for examples of how you might lay out a chart for the year: https://thesportjournal.org/article/tools-and-benefits-of-periodization-developing-an-annual-training-plan-and-promoting-performance-improvements-in-athletes/

Add visuals immediately below this box.

Add visuals of the 52-week periodization plan, including the phases & cycles you discussed in #3 here (use as much space as needed):

5) Assessments to be performed prior to and during the training program (10 pts.)

Include the following information. Sources should be cited using the format for in-text citations in APA 7th edition style.

a) What assessments will you use and what is your reasoning for selecting the tests and for the timing of re-assessments?

b) Provide supporting evidence (in-text references). Continue typing if you need more space.

6) References (5 points)

List the references you cited in your answers above, using APA 7th edition format. You should have at least 5 peer-reviewed sources for this assignment.

Continue typing if you need more space.

FINAL STEPS: Before you submit the worksheet If an answer is “no,” then revise before you submit the assignment!

1) Is the information above complete?

2) Did you provide a rationale (reasoning) everywhere you were asked?

3) Did you provide supporting evidence for your plan or program (i.e., references)?

4) Are your references peer-reviewed?

5) Did you list your references in the proper format style (APA 7th edition)?

6) Did you run Editor in Word to check spelling, punctuation, and grammar?

7) Did you follow instructions for the format of the paper, including the name of the document?

Refer to the complete rubric for the Assignment for a complete breakdown of point values.

FAQs:

Is information from a web site peer-reviewed? No.

Some web sites contain useful and accurate information; however, even highly reputable web sites are not appropriate sources of information for an academic paper. A web site that lists the sources of information may lead you to a peer-reviewed reference you can use.

What is a peer-reviewed reference and how do I find one? https://apus.libanswers.com/faq/2154

Where can I find APA 7th ed. resources? There is an announcement in the classroom with links to several resources. You can also find information here: https://apastyle.apa.org/products/publication-manual-7th-edition

SPHE 323 – Assignment 1: Athlete Analysis Instructions: Complete the following worksheet. Provide all information as specified in the document. See the Sample Answer document and Assignment 1 Rubric for additional guidance and resources. 1) Athlete Demographic Information (15 pts.)

2) Athlete Background & Pertinent Medical History (20 pts.)

3) 3)

Athlete Demographic Information Age: 19 Sex: M Height/weight: 6’5”/195lbs Athlete Background & Pertinent Medical History Sports and training history/experience: Athlete has been playing baseball since age 7. They didn’t start fully working out until they were in High School. Most of that was basic weight lifting and conditioning skills. Health issues: None Occupation: College student athlete. Other responsibilities that influence training and competition (school, work, family, etc.). Continue typing if you need more space. Athlete is a student athlete at the local Junior College, playing on the baseball team. Athlete is currently on scholarship and does not have a job at the moment. Athlete states that his biggest focus is on school and improving his skills as a baseball player to hopefully receive a scholarship to a Division I school or being drafted in the MLB.

Training Plan (10 pts.)

4) Pre-Tests to be performed prior developing training program (20 pts.) When beginning the assessment of the athlete, a few test should be ran to set a baseline of performance and give the trainer and athlete the ability to see where the strengths and weaknesses of the athlete lay. Vertical jumps will be used to find lower body strength. These test with single leg jumps, will show any imbalance in strength and ROM. Lower body strength is key to throwing velocity and speed on the field. Another test will be the seated shot put throw. This will allow for power and strength of the upper extremities. Although there will be an imbalance from dominate to non-dominate arms. The test for agility will be the Functional Movement Screen. This test shows the athlete’s ability for injury prevention and movement patterns that will negatively affect performance.

Training Plan Include the following information. Sources should be cited using the format for in-text citations in APA 7th edition style. a) Sport for which athlete is in training: Baseball b) Periodization type (block, linear, non-linear): combination of the three c) Describe your periodization plan/training model, including your rationale (reasoning) for your choice. Be sure and cite the sources you are basing your reasoning and plan upon. Continue typing if you need more space. I would start by taking down some metrics so that we can establish a baseline of performance. Throwing velocity, ROM, 90 feet sprint times and change of direction times. These will provide a starting off point in which we can return to these assessments to show progress. The implementation of speed and agility assessments is necessary to help ensure that the transfer of training is contributing to the improvements in these performance variables. (Klein, et al, 2021) This plan will start by being a macrocycle, a year-long plan, but broken into smaller units of training, mesocycles. The workouts will be tailored depending upon how the athlete responds to the training and can be adjusted throughout the cycle to ensure performance is being optimized. Here is where you see the linear and non-linear periodization come into play. These will be used throughout the training year, incorporating speed, power, ROM, agility portions.

5) References (5 points)

Pre-Tests to be performed prior developing training program Include the following information. Sources should be cited using the format for in-text citations in APA 7th edition style. a) What pre-tests will you use and what is your reasoning for selecting each test? Vertical jumps: Vertical jumps can help determine the strength of the lower body of an athlete. For baseball players, lower strength is key to sprinting and pitching velocity. The vertical jump test is considered a measure of explosive anaerobic power (Klein, et al, 2021) The test for lower extremities should test through the kinetic chain, not just a specific joint, like the ankle, knee, or hip.

Single-Leg Hop

For the single-leg hop, the score is the distance from the start to the location of the posterior heel of the landing leg. (Manske & Reiman, 2013) This tests the functionability of the knee and lower body extremity strength. This will also show any imbalances in strength between each leg.

Functional Movement Screen

These movement patterns are designed to provide observable performance of basic locomotor, manipulative and stabilizing movements by placing an individual in extreme positions where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable if appropriate mobility and motor control is not utilized. (Functional Movement Screen (FMS), 2021)
