As a classroom teacher, it is important to study state grade level and content area standards to determine the specific content and skills that should be taught in relation to each genre. Additionally, a strong knowledge of genre-specific characteristics is essential in helping teachers select books and reading materials that are grade appropriate and provide students with a wide range of reading opportunities that are culturally diverse and relevant and promote pluralism and linguistic diversity.
