Dear Max,
This is an update on the research that Richard Adams and I conducted on Pepsi XL, the low-sugar cola drink that our primary competitor, Pepsi, is releasing. The research was carried out by both of us. The beverage is sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, which is a form of sugar, and an artificial sweetener in equal parts (aspartame). Pepsi-Cola intends to spend more than $8 million in order to bring the beverage to market and gauge consumer reaction to it. It will be piloted in five different cities across Southern Ontario at different types of retail establishments, including grocery stores, big-box stores, and convenience stores.
A representative of the corporation explained that the initials “X” and “L” stand for “excellent taste” and “least sugar,” respectively. It is targeted to young adults who are concerned about the number of calories they consume but do not want to sacrifice flavor. According to the findings of our research, comparable beverages that were introduced into the market in this country throughout the 1990s were not successful. However, a cola with less sugar and only 50 calories that was released in the United States two years ago was very popular. When they first started advertising a soda with only 40 calories, it took some time before it became popular in Japan.
Richard and I are of the opinion that consumers in this country will not want to purchase a cola with a medium amount of calories at this time. We were taken aback when Wall Street seemed to agree with what Pepsi had to say, which resulted in a significant increase in the stock price of Pepsi-Cola. If it were up to us, we would wait to see how successful Pepsi XL is before determining whether or not to produce our very own low-sugar beverage. If it were up to us, we would wait.
