Vlahos includes that modern voice assistants advertise themselves as helpful friends, and his experience with one such assistant has reinforced this impression. Updates are essential for continued existence in an ever-evolving environment and for giving people the most authentic possible experience. For the sake of evolution, James Vlahos is correct that state-of-the-art voice assistants need some tweaking and his interaction with modern voice assistants lends credence to his point. Voice assistants will benefit from the enhancements he proposes. These devices are improving with each new iteration, and this trend will continue. Although digital voice assistants have flaws as they are today, it doesn’t discourage people from communicating with them. Humans continue using voice assistants because they are so helpful and handy most of the time. However, voice assistants may need some improvements making the voice assistants more lifelike and enhancing the user experience.
Programming digital voice assistants with friendly personalities make users want to interact with the device more or even desire it. Companies found that if humans had a name and could picture a personality type, they were more likely to give access to more of their life. It makes sense, thinking you are talking to someone you know, developing a relationship with the personality, and creating a feeling of trust. In the article, Sarah Wulfeck, the creative director for a conversational-computing company called PullString. “Humans in the flesh world don’t enjoy conversations with dry, boring people,” she said in a magazine interview, “so why would we want that from our artificial intelligence?” (Vlahos, 61). Human interaction with digital assistance is the key to creating a better experience for the user. The first stage is trusting and talking with the device. Sharing personal information (emails, calendars, photos, and sensitive information) is how the device will develop a deep connection with its human. The more they use the device, the better the experience. If there is a negative to becoming best friends with an inanimate object, it might miss out on real human interaction, which most humans crave.
Vlahos makes a compelling argument for why more humanlike avatars are the way forward for digital voice assistants. The next generation of digital voice assistants will include a more humanlike avatar that can carry on conversations and offer emotional support. The current digital voice assistants like Siri and Alexa are not sophisticated enough to generate realistic and credible personalities, limiting their usefulness. Implications: more genuine and believable personas might have positive and negative results. On the positive side, these personas may be able to provide those in need with the emotional support they want.
