Two perspectives address how we as a society understand our relationship with communication technologies:
Social determinism/constructivism suggests that humans guide and use communication devices, altering the devices and their uses to fit the users’ needs
Technological determinism/techno-determinism suggests that the devices themselves innately change society as humans integrate the communication technologies into their connections and communicative behaviors
Pick a side: Which do you believe (more strongly)?
Mobile phones — and potentially other communication technologies — are making us less communicative with those around us (consistent with techno-determinism) or
We are instead using mobile phones to communicate more with those whom we want, rather than just who are physically near us (consistent with social constructivism)
