Student Engagement Activity
Multiple researchers have found that college students are more likely to be successful if they engage with the school’s community. These connections can be social, or they can be resources meant to support students on their educational journey.
Possible Resources and Activities
This list is not meant to be comprehensive. If you learn of another option you feel may be appropriate, bring me a flier or email about it at least one week before the event. I will let you know in writing whether it will count towards this assignment. (Note: attending a regular class meeting or activity only offered to students in a particular course does not count towards this assignment.)
I strongly recommend you pick two different activities or resources. Doing this will help you learn more about the support and opportunities available. You should also consider your needs at the time you participate. What do you need to do in order to become a stronger student, and how can that resource or activity help you achieve that goal?
Visit one of your professors during office hours for help on a particular assignment (as much as I love to talk with you, stopping by just to chat doesn’t count!)
Meet with one of the coaches at the Academic Success Center (ASC) about an assignment or concept covered in a class you need help understanding. This includes getting feedback on a written assignment. For guidelines and information, see the ASC page under “Student Resources” on Midlands Tech’s home page.
Work with an online coach at Tutor.com about an assignment or concept covered in a class you need help understanding. This includes getting feedback on a written assignment.
See our D2L site’s homepage for a widget linking to Tutor.com
Visit the Counseling and Career Services for help with a particular issue (Note: you do not have to disclose the reason for your visit, though you should be sure to talk about whether you found this resource helpful)
Attend a workshop or activity for students held by any office or department (such as a guest lecture or discussion).
This includes workshops from the Life Skills Center, the MTC Library, Counseling and Career Services.
Form a study group with classmates for any course. Ideally, the group should meet more than once.
Participate in a student group by either attending a general meeting or participating in a special event sponsored by a student group.
