FOR ECEs
Scenario: Dustin and his family
You’re an ECE at an early learning program in central Saskatchewan. Three year old Dustin Bitternose is starting in your program next week. You’ve briefly met with Dustin and his family. So far, you’ve learned Dustin’s first language is Cree, but he is able to understand and speak English. Both of his parents, Treena and Kim speak English. Dustin’s kokum, Alice, is quite involved with his upbringing. Cree is spoken when Dustin’s kokum interacts with him. This will be Dustin’s first time attending an early learning program. Dustin’s parents are having a difficult time with having someone else care for their son. His primary caregivers have always been his kokum and his mom. Dustin appears to be a quiet child with a curious smile. Dustin’s mom, Treena, is going back to school to become a teacher. She is beginning her studies in the Saskatchewan Urban Native Teacher Education Program (SUNTEP) at the University of Saskatchewan. She hopes to work with young children teaching Kindergarten or Grade One.
Question: For each of the six ways on developing relationship with families that includes the following: 1. Take time to develop lasting relationships with parents. 2. Be available. 3. Be yourself. 4. Share while staying within your own personal boundaries. 5. Be trustworthy. 6. Remember that the relationship is in service to the child, not your needs.
Explain how you could apply it to Dustin and his family in the scenario above.
