Scenario

You have two options on what type of Data Center you can build. Choose one option for this Assessment.

Option 1: E-Commerce.

You are working for an e-commerce company called Data Tier Corporation which has offices in New York, San Francisco, and Houston. The Data Tier Corporation is a reseller and wholesaler of goods and services through its digital store front. The Company has decided to consolidate its datacenters into one new location. The CIO has tasked you with designing the Data Center and choosing a new location. Data Tier Corporation is currently using 1 Petabyte of data including company proprietary-commerce information and client account information, but wants your design to be able to handle future growth.

By choosing Option 1, your design will need to prioritize Server (i.e.; CPU & Memory) growth over Storage growth to address the company’s strategic goal of server consolidation, without sacrificing performance. For this option, you are providing increased processing power and memory through Server growth to ensure you meet the performance requirements of the online storefront. You will need to provide enough rack space to host the current number of servers and provide enough room for 10% server growth.

For your design, you must design a Data Center within the following constraints:

· Server Rack

· Make use of 750 – 1000 physical servers (40 – 60 racks)

· Able to handle 1 Petabyte – 5 Petabyte of storage. (1 – 5 racks)

· Has at least one network switch per rack

· Has at least one power distribution unit

· Geographical Location

· Has access to one or more ISPs (Internet Service Providers)

· Has access to one or more power grid(s)

Option 2: HealthCare.

You are working for Datum which has recently taken control of ten hospitals in their local region. The CIO has tasked you with creating a new Data Center to consolidate all the data and function of the ten sites. The company is currently using 10 Petabytes of data including Patient Records, propriety Employee and hospital information but wants your design to be able to handle future growth.

By choosing Option 2, your design will need to prioritize Storage growth over Server (i.e.; CPU & Memory) growth to address the company’s strategic goal of consolidating all patient records, hospital data and doctor/personal information/insurance data. For this option, you will need to provide enough rack space to host the current amount of storage and provide enough room for 20% Storage growth.

For your design, you must design a Data Center within the following constraints:

· Server Room

· Make use of 300 – 500 physical servers (14 – 24 racks)

· Able to handle 10 Petabyte – 15 Petabyte of storage. (10 – 15 racks)

· Has at least one network switch per rack

· Has at least one power distribution unit

· Geographical Location

· Has access to one or more ISPs (Internet Service Providers)

· Has access to one or more power grid(s)

Instructions

Select one of the above scenarios. Create a proposal for a Data Center for your selected scenario with full data center floor plan design, plans to reallocate and decommission legacy hardware, Business Continuity plan, and suggestions for future trends in server storage all according to the requirements of your chosen scenario. The proposal will be 10-15 pages (not including cover page, table of content, reference page and drawings) that will include the following:

1. A cover page with the company and preparer’s name.

2. Table of Content.

3. Write an executive summary that addresses how your solution will meet the strategic goals of the company’s IT concerns.

4. Write a plan to reallocate and decommission legacy hardware.

5. Business Continuity Plan that include the following:

6. Fault tolerance, Backup and replication strategies.

7. Disaster Recovery.

8. Physical access and Security controls.

9. Create a Visio diagram showing the floorplan layout of your new data center. Your plan view architectural design of the floorplan of the Data Center must include:

10. A Plan View design

11. Enough floor space to host office space, rack space and room for heating and cooling solutions

12. At least two rooms for office and personal

13. One or two rooms for cooling and heating solutions

14. Enough floor space to fit your required server and storage racks.

15. Provide suggestions for future trends in server storage.

The overall proposal will be created using a Word document 10-15 pages with screenshots or embedded images of the Visio diagram of your floorplan. Professional language and proper spelling/grammar must be used throughout the document.
