You must include at least five images (one visual example from at least four different historical style movements, plus one contemporary visual example).

Each image should be identified in full: title of work or description of object (e.g., ceramic bowl), artist or designer, date of creation, medium (e.g., lithograph poster, bronze sculpture, etc.), and design style (e.g., De Stijl).

Under each image, you will provide a brief summary of one to two paragraphs of the required accompanying text for each image (see final project guidelines)

This assignment must be in the form of an outline, but the actual format is up to you (e.g., bulleted, numbered). Whichever format you use, your outline must be organized and labeled clearly.

Art Exploration: Transformation Theme

For my final project, I wish to explore the theme of “Metamorphosis in Nature and Art” by looking at many examples of designs and artworks that show growth and metamorphism. With this theme, I am able to find links among several cases from different art spheres because the concept of development and transformation is emphasized. I will analyze different sculptures, paintings and designed objects which depict the metamorphosis of nature like life cycle of butterflies, changes in seasons or morphological transformations in plant kingdom as well animal kind.

Following this theme, I want to demonstrate the cyclical and dynamic nature of our surroundings reflected in designers’ and artists’ works. I intend to use three main pictures from my research that are representative of multiple aspects of change. I will start with Salvador Dalí’s “The Persistence of Memory” which successfully describes the surreal landscapes as mutable and time being a fluid aspect (Dali).

On top of this, I will have to dig deep into “The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa” which is a sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Consequently, this would help me understand the manner in which the artist metaphorically captures the emotion of transcendent pleasure (Meyer).

I would also have to show the manner in which latest designers reinterpret and then relate it with the aspect of metamorphosis. From this, I can come up with crucial findings such as incorporating a modern design object, and a classic example would be the "Metamorphosis Center Table" by Boca do Lobo (Covet House).

My thesis centers on the notion that artistic representations of metamorphosis act as potent metaphors for the human condition, demonstrating our capacity for adaptation, development, and acceptance of change. In addition to reflecting the natural world, artistic depictions of transition offer us a prism through which to see our own evolutionary path. I want to show how the concept of transformation in art and design has ongoing significance and appeal to all people through a thorough investigation of these many works. From this, I can then show how art can be used to create connections between people, nature and other crucial aspects of society thus leading to a thorough thesis.
