Module 07: Discussion – Human Sexual Response

Human Sexual Response Video Assignment

This assignment is required and counts towards your grade in this course.

Purpose

This video will help you to explain Masters and Johnson's sexual response cycle. It will provide an opportunity to write your learning, share your thoughts with others, and learn from other perspectives in the class.

Directions

Watch the "Human Sexual Response" video linked above. The video can also be accessed at:

Showtime "Masters of Sex" — Masters and Johnson On America's Biggest Sexual Experiment (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZcYTCo-D9s)

This video presents the work of sexologists Masters and Johnson.

After watching the video, select 3 of the following 4 questions and share your answers on the discussion board forum titled, “Human Sexual Response Discussion”.

Were you surprised that "getting research subjects was easy" in the 1950s and 1960s for Masters and Johnson's research? Why or why not?

2/9/24, 9:06 AM Topic: Module 07: Discussion – Human Sexual Response

Would such research be as scandalous today? Why or why not? What are the benefits of the research methodology used by Masters and Johnson? What findings were discovered that couldn't have been revealed with other types of methods such as an questionnaire? The video clip states that Masters and Johnson's book outlined "the four phases of orgasm and the physiological responses of each phase". Using your textbook, identify each phase/stage and explain the responses of each phase/stage.

A numbered list of your answers/responses is acceptable for this assignment. You will not be able to see any other student work until you have first submitted your own work.

After posting your work, read other student posts and leave comments if you'd like. Please remember to use Netiquette Guidelines in all discussion boards.

Module 07: Individual Discussion – Heterosexuality Privilege for Sale – Part II This assignment is required and counts towards your points for your final grade in this course.

Purpose

This assignment will help you to better understand the heterosexuality bias/assumption and investigate the concept of heterosexual privilege. It will give you an opportunity to reflect on your own values as well as highlight the many ways that heterosexism and homophobia is institutionalized throughout our culture and systems. It will also give you an opportunity to work in a small group to collaborate with other students and increase your exposure to and awareness of diverse perspectives.

Task

Many “rights” are not extended to the queer community and many of these privileges are not limited to political or legal ones but include social and interpersonal privilege as well. There are a wide variety of privileges that those in heterosexual or what we would consider opposite sex relationships are endowed with in this society. Some are personal, social, political or even legal. And while we often focus on the fights for the legal or political privileges, there are also day-to-day experiences of those in the LGBTQ community to keep in mind. Remember that privilege – money in this case – can at times beget more privilege – and gain access to more privilege. In moving forward from this activity I think it would be positive to keep this in mind when we talk about how does stigma and marginalization effect those in the LGBTQ community or in same-sex relationships – that all of these things affect someone’s daily life and experiences.

This assignment has two parts:

Part I – Should have been completed on the previous page:

This is a small group task and you have been assigned to a group of 3 or 4 students – please find your group in the “People” area in the left of our class site (Professor will create this by the end of the 6th week). You will need to use the “Module 07: Group

Discussion – Heterosexuality Privilege for Sale – Part I (https://learn.vccs.edu/courses/601731/discussion_topics/7231931) ” forum for this part of the assignment.

Please review the following sheet with a list of privileges on it:

For the purposes of this activity we all are going to exist in a world without these privileges. You and your group are going to have to buy specific privileges. Each privilege costs $100. You have each received money to buy the privileges – see my post in your group discussion board to find out how much you were given to spend.

As a group you must decide which privileges to buy using your group discussion board to discuss/debate your decision. Once you’ve decided on your privileges, please post a thread titled: “Final Privileges”.

Students need to post at least 2 substantive threads (contributing to the discussion, not just saying “hi” or “good idea” etc). before the due date for Part I.

Part II (due 11:59 p.m. on the due date listed):

This is an individual task.

After working with your group to purchase privileges answer the following questions on your own:

Was it difficult to pick out the privileges? Why or why not? What on this list surprised you? Are there any items that you would like to discuss more as a group or found particularly interesting? Are there any items you don’t quite understand? Would your individual list of privileges have differed from those purchased by your group? In what way? How did this activity make you feel? What have you learned from this activity?

Post your answers to the whole class discussion board under the “Module 07: Individual Discussion – Heterosexuality Privilege for Sale – Part II (https://learn.vccs.edu/courses/601731/discussion_topics/7231931) ” forum. Each student must post their own work
