Introduction

In this third unit, you will learn about vitamins, minerals, water, and fluid and electrolyte balance. As you can infer from the name, fat-soluble vitamins are vitamins that must be absorbed through fat. Many people think eliminating fat from their diet will increase their health, but our bodies cannot absorb fat-soluble vitamins without some fat. All water-soluble vitamins play a different kind of role in energy metabolism; they are required as functional parts of enzymes involved in energy release and storage. In addition to being essential for metabolism, many vitamins and minerals are required for blood renewal and function.

Maintaining the right level of water in your body is crucial to survival, as either too little or too much water in your body will result in less-than-optimal functioning. Of all the nutrients, water is the most critical, as its absence proves lethal within a few days. You are introduced to other popular drinks such as sports, carbonated, and coffee and the effects these drinks have on your health
