Teachers are responsible for building foundational knowledge to promote students’ abilities to make informed decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse democratic society and interdependent world. Using engaging strategies and integration of the arts can help make real-world connections with the content and help students appreciated diverse cultures.
Allocate at least 4 hours in the field to support this field experience.
Part 1: Deliver Lesson
With permission from your mentor teacher, work with the student or small group of students identified in Clinical Field Experience A. Instruct and/or assist the student/s when working on the current lesson. Identify the areas where the student/s seem to struggle. If you are instructing, have your mentor teacher observe your methods of delivery and engagement.
Part 2: Feedback from Mentor
Meet with your mentor teacher following the lesson to discuss your findings. Share intervention and engagement strategies you feel would benefit the student/s. At least one strategy should help the student make a real-world connection with content to promote student appreciation of diverse cultures. Have your mentor review these with you to make sure they are appropriate and discuss how they will support struggling students. Determine if the student or group of student/s you will be working with in your future clinical field experiences has changed.
Part 3: Intervention Plan and Reflection
Collaborate with your mentor teacher to create an intervention plan for the student/s identified as struggling. This plan can be a lesson you deliver independently to the struggling student or small group of students or a plan to intervene with struggling students while your mentor teacher provides instruction to the whole class.
- Discuss with your mentor an upcoming grade/level social studies or art lesson or activity during which you can implement applicable interventions from the plan. Be prepared to use these interventions in Topic 4 Clinical Field Experience C.
- Base the intervention on your own observational data, as well as other assessment data the mentor teacher has available.
- Discuss the learning objectives for the lesson, the standards they relate to, and how you will know a student has achieved mastery.
- Include strategies that promote student learning and engagement. Discuss with your mentor how they are appropriate for the inclusive classroom and the student/s you will work with in future clinical field experiences.
- Include at least one strategy to help the student/s make real-world connections with content and promote their appreciation of diverse cultures.
Spend any remaining field experience hours observing or assisting the mentor teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
Write a 250-500 word summary of the student observations and discussion with the mentor teacher regarding the intervention plan. Discuss how the intervention plan will support student learning and engagement in the inclusive classroom and promote students’ abilities to make informed decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse democratic society and interdependent world.
