Com-100 Chapter 4 Language Exercise
.You are to come up with 5 lists, with 6 words and/or terms in each that
help demonstrate how language is constantly changing! Here are the
lists:
1. Come up with 6 words/terms that are new and only a part of our
mainstream language over the past 8 years…by mainstream I
mean people 8-80 years old know and understand the
meaning…and NO SLANG TERMS!
2. Come up with 6 words/terms that are old and/or obsolete, and are
no longer a part of mainstream language…it could be a word
used currently, but had a different meaning that no one uses
anymore
3. Come up with 6 words/terms that derive from a co-cultural group
in America, but are a part of mainstream language..example:
many people who are not Hawaiian say hello by saying ALOHA, or
say goodbye by saying Ciao, even though they are not Italian
4. Come up with 6 words/terms that always bring about Negative
Connotations…for example, I used to jokingly say to students
nervous about speeches they needed to come to the front of the
room at Ground Zero…after 9/11, I’ve never said that again..
5. Come up with 6 Slang words/terms….and provide the meaning
behind each one..
