In this module, learning the specifics of different types of leadership was very insightful. I was able to put myself into a couple of categories.
I feel like I have the qualities of being both a task and social-oriented leader. I would say I focus more on tasks because I like to accomplish things. I like to stay on a strict schedule and stay productive with my list. Knowing specific guidelines and timelines, I feel that since I am also a numbers person, I am always looking at the project date. Being in the classroom every day, we as educators, have deadlines for grades, forms, and lesson plans. This helps me to stay focused on the task at hand.
Task-oriented leaders have three important aspects. Initiating structure is where the leader organizes group activities, assigns group roles, and defines how tasks are to be completed. Production orientation is focused on producing the project by a certain timeline. Concern for production is when a leader’s top focus is organizational efficiency with high productivity levels. Social leadership can also be called relationship because these leaders are more focused on relationships instead of individual tasks. Three important aspects of social leadership are consideration of behavior, employee orientation, and concern for people.
The most effective leaders combine the two and are able to switch between them depending on the demands of the team, organization, and scenario. For instance, in a start-up company, the leader must concentrate on task-related abilities to provide their followers with clear goals and social leadership when there is uncertainty.
The most important skill in Katz’s Three-Skill model is conceptual. Different levels of management have different skills, but in middle management, you have to be more conceptual along with technical and human skills. Although each skill set has its uses in various settings, conceptual talents are typically more pertinent in higher-level thinking and large strategic issues (as opposed to lower-level and line management). As a result, conceptual abilities are frequently seen as essential components of effective leadership.
Environmental factors can make a leader focus on other things instead of keeping focus. Things such as demographics, political factors, technology, and resources are all types of factors that could change the focus of a leader. Competitiveness could also be a huge factor because it would make a leader unsuccessful.
I feel like I need to work on being more relational as a leader and try to incorporate it into my tasks. I tend to focus more on the tasks at hand and the deadline they are to be completed. Therefore, I think that I do a good job of being task-oriented. I help with our quarterback club at the high school and we have deadlines to meet for the printing of programs, tickets, and parking passes. When the year starts I devote too much time to preparing and completing these tasks rather than bringing others in (relational) to help and delegating responsibilities.
All three videos were insightful and very different. The first video helped me realize that there are many decisions that were made years ago just like we make them today, just on different levels than now. The skills approach to leadership video was helpful in that it in-depth defined the skill models to show individual attributes, competencies, and leadership outcomes. He showed the different perspectives on leadership skills, administrative skills, capability model, skills model, and the strengths and weaknesses of all. In the last video interview, the two girls were actually comical. After listening to the questions and answers you could definitely tell the difference between the two as task or social-oriented. What I thought was cool was when the interviewer asked them what they thought she was. The answer was a lot of both because of her type of job and how she had to focus on the tasks and deadlines but also be very social because she deals with the public daily. These will help me to be more conscious of applying other styles to my leadership in the classroom. I hope that I can teach my students the difference in what type of leader is successful so that they are able to make successful leaders when they
