Every industry has had to look inside itself – at its hiring practices, workplace conditions, and pay equity, among other concerns – and make long needed changes that address diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
In the media industries, there have been a range of structural adjustments which unfortunately we do not have the time to explore. One of the most important, if simple, changes is the decision that the New York Times made to begin capitalizing the word “Black” when describing the community, not the color.
There has also been a movement to replace the term “Latina/o” with “Latinx.” Supporters of this change argue that “Latinx” is gender neutral, therefore more inclusive and progresive, among other reasons discussed in the readings.
