For this weeks discussion I chose topic B. During the past pandemic I lived in Guam and it being such a small Island covid protocols were highly enforced. Needing to wear a mask even outside and not being in groups outside of immediate family. When I think of wearing a mask, I think of only needing to wear it when around infected people or when knowingly around the elderly that are prone to health problems. I know that seems odd but I feel that people should be able to chose to not wear a mask. If people chose to go out knowing they could possibly get infected, that is their choice. No days you can order groceries and necessities if you are worried about a pandemic. I do not think people should be fined of put in jail for not wearing a mask. This is based that I do not think we should even have too. I believe our freedom rights should allow people that want not wear it and take the risk they can if they so please. If the mask required facilities like hospitals chose to have a fine I could see that. But everyday use I do not think people should get in trouble for not wearing one. If you are prone to infections just be more cautious and if you are not feeling 100% stay at a distance. There are so many different angles and opinions on this topic that it will be a conversation forever.

Topic B was an interesting discussion because we all lived it and had different opinions and experiences regarding the pandemic. While the flu causes around 12,000-50,000 (UsaFacts, 2021) deaths within the USA annually, COVID-19 has taken over 1 million according to Google search. Wearing a mask through a pandemic that is spread through the respiratory system just makes sense. While it may be more comfortable to not wear a mask sacrificing this small pleasure for the greater good benefits everyone. How “happy” are you when you walk into a department store, and everyone is wearing a mask ever feel that nagging feeling that you’re doing something wrong and that you are vulnerable to being infected. What if someone in the store was desperate to get basic needs and they had to go out in public? Wearing a mask can reduce the chances that you or others experience the negative effects such as missing work which leads to inability to pay bills this is a slippery slope which can lead to people doing desperate things such as robbery in order to make ends meet.
Drinking and driving is illegal because of the damage and deaths it can cause. In 2022 over 10,000 people were killed by drunk drivers (Safe Home) COVID-19 has taken many more lives. Walking out into public without wearing a mask should have the same repercussions, because you are exposing people to something very dangerous willingly or not.
