Whose Standards Are the Standards?
Many minoritized groups are constantly facing unfair actions against them in schools. Strict disciplinary policies implemented in schools such as zero tolerance policy, creation of behavior standards such as Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS), can be racialized, gendered, biased, and hostile. “Zero tolerance” policies remove students from the classroom and can put them into unsafe, criminalized environments (i.e., in school suspension). PBIS practice promotes white normative behavior as the standard for students to follow, promoting a tier system on how to support their norms depended on disciplinary histories from students. This creates the school-to-prison pipeline keeping people of color -specifically Black boys and men- within criminal justice systems.
1) Analyze Zero Tolerance policy & PBIS (look up the policy and practice on google) from a CRT lens, and tell me why these standards are in place?
2) Why are minoritized groups being affected more than other?
3) What can we do now that you are aware?
