Q – Identify and discuss reflective practice principles. During your work placement, engage in reflective practice with peers, colleagues and/or Observers to assist you to recognise how your own personal values/beliefs affects your work performance. During your discussions, identify strategies for on-going professional development.
Student is required to list at least four (4) core values and explain how these have impacted on their work performance.
My answer –
During my placement I was made aware of my own feelings, that I was experiencing while young people were talking about their own feelings, situations, and experiences (negative). This is something I have to be self-aware of as I could develop vicarious trauma. By taking care of myself emotionally, having regular self-check in with myself and doing extra training on various trauma will help prevent this. Regular meetings with my supervisor will help me understand my feelings and we will always be able to do what is best for the client.
In the future I believe I will struggle if a client isn’t using the tools, I am offering to help themselves. I personally do believe it is hard for people to use these tools in their own life’s on their own. If the client is not wanting to help themselves after a few times of telling me, they will, I will feel frustrated. By asking for feedback from the client and addressing the barriers the client is experience can help my feelings and help the client. Asking for support and feedback from my supervisor can lead to having different and better tools to help the client.
In the future I am going to be see a lot of diverse people and I believe I will struggle when I meet someone who doesn’t think I am the right people for them. I would not feel good enough. By being aware that I am not going to be everyone’s cup of tea and doing self-reflection will help me overcome these feelings. Understanding the client’s needs and wants will be able to help me refer them to someone who they believe is a better fit. Talking to my supervisor for support through this situation.
Having boundaries with clients regarding time will be something I have to work on. In my last career I have always struggled with saying no to fit client’s in last minute if they haven’t booked in fast enough. By having boundaries in what I can handle will help me prevent burn out. If I do have overwhelming feelings to always check in with my supervisor.
